Confidentiality of records

The Champaign County Library specifically recognizes that its circulation records and other records identifying the names of library users with specific materials or Internet activity are confidential in nature.  No such records shall be made available to any agency of state, federal or local government, or to any individual not specifically authorized by the library director for legitimate business purposes, except pursuant to such process, order, or subpoena as may be authorized under the authority of, and pursuant to federal, state, or local law relating to civil, criminal, or administrative discovery procedures or legislative investigatory power.

Upon receipt of such process, order, or subpoena, the library’s officers will consult with their legal counsel to determine if such process, order, or subpoena is in proper form and if there is a showing of good cause for its issuance in a court of competent jurisdiction.  If the process, order, or subpoena is not in proper form or if good cause has not been shown, the library will insist that such defects be cured.

Account information of minor children may be provided to their parents/guardians.

Patrons may request the Champaign County Library to retain their personal loan history.  These records can be accessed by the patron and the staff of the Champaign County Library.  This information would be confidential and would only be released by the library in accordance with the terms of the Champaign County Library confidentiality policy.  Patrons can revoke their request at any time and their loan history will be deleted.

Patrons may update their address, telephone number, PIN, or email address by calling the library.  In order to provide or update the requested information, library staff must be able to reasonably verify the patron’s identity by library card number, date of birth, and/or telephone number and address.  Library card numbers will not be provided over the phone by library staff.
